First, a quick primer. ECN stands for Épreuves Classantes Nationales (National Ranking Exams). Renamed in 2020 to EDN (Épreuves Dématérialisées Nationales), the colloquial name “ECN” has stuck. Taken at the end of the 6th year of medical school, this computerized exam ranks every aspiring doctor in France. The score determines which specialty (from general practice to neurosurgery) and which city a student can choose. A difference of one point can mean the difference between dermatology in Paris and general practice in a small rural town.
