The twist, of course, is that “gratis” is almost never truly free. You pay with time (sifting through fake links), with security (the .exe is often a trojan), and with dignity (watching three “You’re the 1,000,000th visitor!” ads before a broken MediaFire link). But the human brain is terrible at calculating invisible costs. The visible price tag of $0 blinds us to everything else.
